NCWC women's
soccer season ends in USA South Tourney
Newport
News, VA - The Battling Bishop women's soccer team
of North Carolina Wesleyan saw its 2009 season come to an
end on Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the USA South
Conference Tournament. The 7th-seeded Bishops fell on the
road at 2nd-seeded Christopher Newport by a 4-1 score,
ending the season with a 5-13-1 overall record. The match
marked the end of the careers of seniors Sarah Hess,
Meredith Hester, Joanne Youngblood, Tiara Joyner, Aubrey
Bonorden, and Sarah Matulich.
The Captains' Sam
Ciarivino tallied a first half hat trick to give CNU a 3-0
lead at the break. Ciarivino's scores came in the 10th,
39th, and 45th minutes, respectively. Kendall Dishaw and
Lauren Fleming were credited with assists on the first two
goals, while Ciarivino's third was unassisted.
Erin Edmundson
netted the final goal of the match in the 89th minute for
the 4-0 final.
CNU out-shot NCWC
25-4 on the night and held an 8-0 advantage in corners. NCWC
keeper Tiina Rastiola recorded four saves before being
relieved in the second half by Hess, who notched six stops.
Dineen Sampson and Meghan Gumbs split time in goal for the
Captains with Gumbs earning two saves.
With the victory,
Christopher Newport moves to 10-7-3 overall and advances to
Friday's semifinal action in Martinsville, VA.
