Knights earn 3-1
win over Bishops in women’s soccer opener
Laurinburg,
NC - In the 2009 women’s
soccer opener, North Carolina Wesleyan fell to Division II
foe St. Andrews Presbyterian by a 3-1 score on the road.
The Knights took a 2-0 lead into intermission that proved to
be the difference in the contest. Highlighting the Bishops’
offensive attack was freshman Lydia Hunt, who notched her
first collegiate goal in the 87th minute to erase SAPC’s
attempt at a shutout.
The Lady Knights
came out strong, taking the first six shots and scoring two
goals in the opening 12 minutes of play. Shana Schroeder
netted the game’s first goal just 4:33 into the match, and
Krystal Hedderman doubled the Knights lead eight minutes
later with a 25-yard shot off the crossbar.
SAPC’s Sam Frazer
scored the Knights’ last goal in the 59th minute. Schroeder
serviced the ball in front of the goal, and Frazer completed
the play with a one-timer.
Hunt got the Bishops
on the board at the 86:18 mark when she fired a shot on goal
that Knight goalie Becca Knott was able to get a hand on.
The hard attempt, however, remained on target and secured
the Rocky Mount native’s first collegiate goal. Senior
Meredith Hester was credited with an assist on the play.
Knott picked up her
second win on the season, making three saves over 90 minutes
in goal. A trio of Battling Bishop goaltenders split time in
net with senior starter Sarah Hess taking the loss. NCWC
freshman Tiina Rastiola had a team-high three saves.
SAPC (2-0) amassed a
19-13 shot advantage and a slight 5-4 corner kick edge.
The Bishops (0-1)
will return to action on Saturday when they travel to
Randolph-Macon College for a 12:00 p.m. match versus the
Yellow Jackets.
