Wesleyan baseball splits league series with Greensboro
Greensboro,
NC -
Seniors Chris Pecora (pictured) and Matt Smith each recorded
three hits on Monday afternoon, leading their North Carolina
Wesleyan baseball squad to a 10-7 win over Greensboro
College on the road. The Bishops, who dropped a 6-5 contest
to the Pride on Sunday, scored eight runs in the seventh and
eighth innings to secure the league split. Wesleyan is now 14-4-1
on the season, 2-2 in USA South action.
In
Monday's finale, junior Justin Batts singled home the game's
first run when he plated Travis Beausoleil in the opening
frame. Wesleyan's 1-0 lead was shortlived, however, as the
Pride's Kyle Bolick returned the favor with an RBI-double to
center in Greensboro's half of the inning.
The
Bishops went up 2-1 on a Justin Rahm sac-fly RBI in the
second, but the Pride scored single runs in the fourth and
fifth to forge a 3-2 lead going in to the seventh.
Wesleyan then erupted for five runs on five hits and two
walks. Batts drove in two more runs with his second hit of
the day, while sophomore Joel Creef delivered a key two-run
double with two outs to give the Bishops a 7-3 advantage.
Greensboro made things interesting with two runs in the
bottom of the inning, but Wesleyan answered with three more
runs in the eighth. Creef again provided the big blow with a
two-run single. The Pride plated two in their half of the
frame, but freshman Andrew Webb came on to record the final
four outs for his second save of the season.
Ben
Moore (4-1) earned the win, allowing five runs (three
earned) on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Dorsett
(3-2) took the loss for the Pride, who used five pitchers on
the day.
On
Sunday, Greensboro scored four runs in the seventh inning,
three of which were unearned, to take a commanding 6-2 lead
into the ninth.
The
Bishops did not go down without a fight as a two-run single
by Batts placed the tying runner at third base.
Unfortunately, the Pride forced a groundout to end the game
and secure the one-run victory.
Kyle
Robertson (2-2) suffered the loss for Wesleyan, giving up
five runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Mock (5-2) earned the win for Greensboro.
Beausoleil paced NCWC offensively with a 3-for-4 showing at
the plate.
The
Bishops will return home to the friendly confines of Bauer
Field on Tuesday. Wesleyan will
host Hampden-Sydney College at 3:30 p.m.
