Mt. Olive golfers win NCWC’s 2007 Don Scalf Invitational

Whitakers, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan men’s golf team hosted its annual Don Scalf Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, February 26th and 27th, at the par-72 Hickory Meadows Golf Course in Whitakers, NC.  The Trojans of Mt. Olive College, who entered both an “A” and “B” team took home first and second place finishes with 595 (+19) and 615 (+39) two-day scores, respectively.  MOC’s Mick Moberg shot a two-day 141 to finish at 3-under (67-74) to take home individual medalist honors among the field of 52.  The host Bishops were led by Chris Crews, who finished tied for 7th place at 11-over par.  Wesleyan finished ninth as a team.

Mt. Olive’s “A” team led after Monday’s first round with a team score of 297.  Moberg’s 67 led all individuals going into the final round as Chowan’s Austin Teal and Southern Virginia’s Grant Dean were the only other individuals to finish at par on the day.

Day two saw the Trojans pull away from the pack as Moberg turned in another solid round with a 2-over 74.  Dean again finished at even par to finish tied for second place with MOC’s Scott Woodard, who tied Moberg’s low round of 67 to pull even for the tournament.

For the Trojan “B” team, Johan Hagsund led the way with a two-day 147 to finish at 3-over in 4th place (76-71).  Hagsund also recorded the shot of the tournament on Tuesday when he turned in a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole.

Other top finishers for Wesleyan included Daniel Chewning, who tied for 22nd place (78-84=162), and Steve Lee, who finished 36th (82-94=176).  Adam Cooper and Chris Brimer rounded out the Bishop scorers, while David Harris competed individually.

Third place honors went to Shenandoah University with a two-day team score of 629 (+53).  Joe Orsino paced the Hornets with a 7th place finish.

The Bishops will return to action next Monday and Tuesday, March 5th and 6th, at Mt. Olive’s Spring Invitational.
