Program Overview
Philosophy: Just like the game itself, the golf program at North
Carolina Wesleyan College is about shooting for improvement, one stroke at a
time. How the golf program shoots for excellence is through the recruitment
of stellar student athletes while continuing the search for improved
training and playing opportunities.
Those who play golf, especially on a very competitive level,
understand the importance of hard work, time management, and a desire for
excellence. Golfers at NC Wesleyan will be challenged both on the course
and in the classroom, for in both arenas, life lessons will be taught and
learned.
Though winning will be a goal for all, it will never replace
the objective of maintaining a high level of sportsmanship, placing an
emphasis on personal character, and recognizing the importance of teamwork.
Schedule: The Bishops play a year-round schedule and
train for the full 21 weeks allotted by NCAA regulation. Wesleyan travels to
an average of three tournaments during its non-traditional fall season and
roughly five during the traditional spring season. Our golf schedule
culminates with the prestigious USA South Conference Tournament in late
April, while our regular season slate pits the Battling Bishops against top
Division I, II, and III opponents throughout the year.
The USA South Conference is considered to be the strongest
D-III conference in the nation and contains NC Wesleyan, Methodist,
Christopher Newport, Greensboro, Ferrum, Shenandoah, and Averett. The NCAA
Division III Championship has been won by a USA South Conference team 11
times since 1990. |
