Rocky Mount, NC - The 8th-ranked Bishops of North
Carolina
Wesleyan saw its
bid at a third
straight USA
South men's
soccer title
come to an end
on Saturday
afternoon.
The Bishops
(15-0-2, 4-0-2),
who needed a win
to take the
crown, fought to
a 1-1 double
overtime tie
with Christopher
Newport (13-4-1,
5-0-1) at Scalf
Field. Not
all was lost,
however, as the
Bishops became
the first soccer
team in Wesleyan
history to go
undefeated
throughout the
regular season.
With the win,
the Captains captured their first title since 2000.
CNU
took a 1-0 lead in the second minute when Michael Caro
crossed a ball
into the box
that was headed
into the back of
the net by
freshman Kevin
Greenberg.
The Bishops knotted the score at 1-1 in the 42nd minute when
Lucas Fuentes
scored an
unassisted goal
off a
corner-kick.
It would be all
the offense the
game would see
as both teams
went scoreless
over the next 68
minutes.
NC Wesleyan out-shot the Captains 22-11 on the day. CNU
goalie Matt
Tengs tallied an
impressive 13
saves, while
Bishop goalie
Renato Corte
notched four.
Both the Captains and Bishops will have a bye into the
semifinals of
the 2006 USA
South Conference
Tournament,
which CNU will
host next Friday
and Saturday
nights.
Second-seeded
Wesleyan will
take on the
winner of #3
Greensboro and
#6 Ferrum.
