Wesleyan's National Title run ends at #2 York in 1-0 loss

York, PA - North Carolina Wesleyan's bid at a National Title in men's soccer came to an end on Friday in a 1-0 loss to 2nd-ranked York College.  The Bishops, making their first Sweet 16 appearance in school history, could not overcome a Spartan goal in the 60th minute in the heartbreaking defeat.  Their 17-2-2 overall record in 2006 equals the most successful season in program history.  In 1987, Wesleyan posted the exact same mark but fell in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Neither squad could find the net in the first half as NCWC goalie Renato Corte and YC keeper Kyle Marks each made two spectacular saves.  The most notable scoring opportunity coming on a Yared Yedenekachew shot that was punched out by Marks.  Wesleyan out-shot the Spartans 5-4 in the period.

York finally broke through at the 59:17 mark when Andrew Wheeler notched an unassisted goal.  The Bishops would not recover as their 6th-ranked offense was held scoreless for the first time this season.

The Spartans out-shot Wesleyan 13-11 in the game.  Corte finished with six saves and Marks four.
