Fuentes' gamewinner lifts Bishops to
4-2 win over RMC
Rocky Mount, NC
- Junior Lucas Fuentes (pictured) scored his
third and fourth goals of the season
on Wednesday, the latter of which
lifted his North Carolina Wesleyan
men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory
over visiting Randolph-Macon College
at Scalf Field. Both of
Fuentes' goals came in the second
half on two separate occasions when
the score was tied. The Bishops
remain undefeated at 3-0 on the
season, while the Yellow Jackets
drop to 1-2 overall.
For
the first time in 2006, Wesleyan
found itself down a goal when RMC's
Kevin Quinn beat Bishop keeper
Renato Corte off of a Marc Welsh
feed in the 35th minute. It
was the first goal allowed by the
Bishop defense this season.
The
lead was shortlived, however, as
Wesleyan tied the game just 45
seconds later. Freshman Edgar
Zaldivar found Oz Otoo in the box,
who lofted the ball over keeper
Jason DePre's head for the 1-1 tie.
The
game remained tied well into the
second half. Fuentes then
connected on the first of his two
goals, heading an Alimamy Kargbo
cross past DePre at the 64:44 mark.
The
Yellow Jackets answered with an
unassisted Welsh goal in the 68th
minute, but Fuentes put Wesleyan on
top for good when he booted home a
Ernesto Marquez pass with 12:37
remaining. Freshman Kris
Banghart added an unassisted
insurance goal on an 18-yard blast
in the 80th minute.
The
Bishops out-shot RMC 28-5 in the
contest with DePre recorded eight
saves on the day.
Wesleyan returns to action this
weekend at the Methodist College
Classic. The Bishops will take
on Southwestern (TX) at 4:00 p.m. on
Friday.
