Bishop men down Greensboro 1-0 in
double overtime
Greensboro, NC
- It took 102 minutes, but the
Bishop men's soccer team of North
Carolina Wesleyan managed to keep
its perfect record in tact on
Tuesday by downing Greensboro
College 1-0 in double overtime.
Lucas Fuentes did the honors for
Wesleyan, drilling a 12-yard shot
past Pride keeper Kurt Gardiner with
less than eight minutes remaining in
the final overtime. The
Bishops are now 7-0 overall, 2-0 in
USA South play.
In
a rematch of the 2005 USA South
Tournament Championship game, both
squads fought soggy conditions
throughout the contest. The
two teams each registered 15 shots
apiece in regulation, but Gardiner
and NCWC goalie Renato Corte
recorded eight and seven saves,
respectively, to send the into
overtime.
The
Bishop defense dominated in extra
play and did not allow a shot by the
Pride. Gardiner recorded two
saves in the first overtime but
could not stop Fuentes' blast just
over two minutes into the final ten
minutes. Freshman Kris
Banghart delivered the pass to
Fuentes, who dribbled through
traffic for the left-footed shot.
The
Bishops out-shot the Pride 21-15 in
the game. They have now
out-scored their opponents 34-3 over
the first seven games of 2006.
Wesleyan will travel to Mountain
State University (WV) on Sunday for
a 2:00 p.m. match-up.
