Bishops seal perfect regular season, win league championship

Newport News, VA - With a 2-1 win over Christopher Newport on Saturday night, the North Carolina Wesleyan men’s soccer team locked up the 2007 USA South Conference Championship and its second consecutive undefeated regular season.  Senior Alimamy Kargbo (pictured) scored the game’s first goal in the 24th minute and assisted on the eventual game-winner late in the first half.  The 2nd-ranked Bishops are now set to host next weekend’s conference tournament and will enter postseason play with a 16-0-0 record.

Kargbo’s goal was unassisted, coming on a 15-yard shot from the right side.  The ball deflected off of a Captain defender and past the out-stretched arms of CNU keeper Matt Tengs.  He later found a breaking BJ Godwin for a similar shot at the 29:46 mark that gave NCWC a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Captains’ lone goal in the final period came on a Michael Caro penalty kick in the 78th minute.  CNU pushed for the equalizer late, but Wesleyan’s defense held strong to ensure a perfect 6-0-0 league mark this season.

NCWC out-shot CNU 9-6 on the night.  Tengs made three saves in the losing effort, while Bishop goalie Alberto Faisca picked up his twelfth win between the pipes, thwarting four Captain shots.

Wesleyan’s 42-game regular season unbeaten streak will now carry over into next season, as will the Bishops’ 24-game league streak.

Next Friday’s semifinal action will be set after Tuesday’s First Round play.  Wesleyan will be webcasting both semifinal games, as well as Saturday’s championship.

The winner of the USA South Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
