Goals by Sarr and
Bertalan lift NCWC to 2-0 win over Methodist
Rocky Mount, NC - Sophomore Ousman
Sarr and freshman Florian Bertalan (pictured) each tallied scores on
Wednesday afternoon, helping their Battling Bishop men's
soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Methodist University at
Scalf Field. Goalkeeper Benjamin Kruk did the rest in goal,
making four saves on nine shots to preserve the shutout.
With the victory, Wesleyan improves to 9-7 on the season,
4-1 in the USA South.
Sarr's goal came in the 28th minute when
he took a pass from Manuel Lomba Pacheco and blasted a
one-timer from 20 yards out. Wesleyan took the 1-0
lead into intermission.
The Monarchs (8-9, 3-2 USAC) had several
scoring opportunities in the second half and out-shot the
Battling Bishops 7-6 in the period. Kruk, however, made
several key deflections to preserve the 1-0 advantage.
Bertalan later put to rest any thoughts of a comeback with
an unassisted goal in the 87th minute. His initial
shot was actually saved by MU keeper Kyle Beach, but
Bertalan headed in the deflection for the 2-0 final.
Beach finished with five saves on ten
Wesleyan shots in the losing efforts. The match was evenly
played throughout with each team earning three corner kicks
and nine fouls.
The Battling Bishops wrap up their 2009
regular season slate on Saturday when they host Greensboro
College on Senior Day.
Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
