Methodist netters pick up 9-0 sweeps over Wesleyan

Rocky Mount, NC - The men’s and women’s tennis teams of Methodist University picked up 9-0 sweeps over North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at the NCWC Tennis Complex. With second place in the league on the line, the Monarch men remained tied for first place with the victory, while the regionally-ranked Methodist women dropped only one game on the day.

On the men’s side, Wesleyan dropped to 6-7 on the season, 3-2 in USA South play. MU’s Chris Fletcher handed current league Rookie of the Week Antti Saari his second singles loss of the season at the #1 seed (6-1, 7-5). Brandon Coleman and Matt Smith also fell in straights after dropping second set tiebreakers at the #2 and #4 slots, respectively.

NCWC freshman Jaime Galasso won the Bishops’ lone game of the day at the top seed but suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to MU’s Tiffany Tucker. The Monarchs cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at two through six.

Methodist took an early edge in both matches with 3-0 doubles sweeps.

Wesleyan’s women return to action at Mary Baldwin on Saturday, while both teams will travel to Ferrum College on Sunday.
