Battling Bishop spring squads complete busy week

Rocky Mount, NC - With the North Carolina Wesleyan spring sports schedule in full swing, last week was a busy week for several Bishop squads, including baseball, lacrosse, softball, and tennis.  Baseball led the way with five wins on the week, while softball recorded three and men's tennis two.  Softball also managed to break one team record as the Bishops continued to demonstrate their power at the plate.

Below are recaps of last week's action.

BASEBALL:  The North Carolina Wesleyan baseball team enjoyed a 5-2 record last week, which included a win over Endicott on Monday, a doubleheader sweep of Lawrence on Wednesday, and a win over Tufts on Thursday.  The Bishops fell on the road at Mary Washinton on Friday before bouncing back to earn a USA South split with Shenandoah on Sunday. At Shenandoah, the Hornets got a walk-off homerun by David Jenkins in the 10th inning to steal a 9-7 victory before the Bishops came back to win game two by a 2-0 score behind a solid pitching performance by Blake Rice. Rice and Jonathan Lucas combined to throw a two-hit shutout.  The Bishops are now 20-12 overall, 5-5 in conference play.

LACROSSE:  After recording back-to-back wins for the first time in program history, the Bishop lacrosse squad endured an 0-3 mark last week.  Wesleyan dropped a heartbreaking 16-15 contest to USA South foe Methodist at home on Wednesday before falling on the road at Marymount on Saturday and Washington on Sunday.  Against Methodist, the Monarchs and Bishops found themselves tied 9-9 at haltime, and NCWC held a two-goal lead in the second half before suffering the tough loss.  Sophomore Cary Trump saw her first action in goal and recorded 16 saves, while senior Allie Stylc led the offensive effort with five goals.  The Bishops are now 3-9 on the season, 1-3 in league action.

SOFTBALL:  Wesleyan's softball team turned in a 3-3 record last week, dropping two games to Methodist on Wednesday before splitting with Greensboro on Friday and sweeping Sweet Briar on Saturday.  Junior pitcher Libby Fulford was the star against Greensboro after tossing two complete games.  In 14 innings of work, she allowed just 10 hits and two earned runs while recording eight strikeouts.  She suffered the 2-0 loss in game one but picked up a crucial 2-1 win in the nightcap.  Fulford earned a win and save in Saturday's sweep of SBC, but it was the Bishop offense that took centerstage as Courtney Tucker blasted two homeruns.  Tucker's two blasts, coupled with Hannah Hardy's homer against Greensboro, helped Wesleyan set a new team record for homeruns in a season with 12.  The Bishops are now 15-6 overall, 5-3 in USA South play.

TENNIS:  The Bishop men's tennis team enjoyed a 2-1 week that saw them rebound from a 9-0 loss to Methodist on Monday to down Greensboro and Spartanburg Methodist by 5-4 scores on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.  The women, however, did not fair as well, but the Lady Bishops managed to snap a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over SMC on Sunday.  Wesleyan's men are now 5-3 on the season, 3-2 in league play, while the women are 4-7 overall, 2-5 in conference action.
