WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT:
Football's
Cedric Townsend rewriting
the record book
Rocky
Mount, NC
- Junior quarterback Cedric
Townsend is putting together
quite a season for head coach
Jack Ginn. Townsend, in
fact, is a major reason the Blue
& Gold are currently 5-4 overall
and 4-2 in USA South play.
So far this season, the
Kenansville, NC native has
passed for 14 touchdowns against
only five interceptions en route
to a 144.37 passer rating.
He also averages over 47 yards
per game on the ground, having
rushed for seven TD scores.
Last week, Townsend
(pictured) grabbed
national attention
by being named to
D3Football’s Team of
the Week. The
honor came after he
earned USA
South Player of the
Week honors, having
led Wesleyan to a
46-24 upset of
18th-ranked
Christopher Newport.
Townsend became the
first member of the
Blue & Gold to
receive the national
honor.
This
past Saturday,
Townsend was at it
again. He led
the Bishops to a
55-14 victory over
Ferrum College,
scoring four
touchdowns (two
rushing, two
passing). The
victory was
Wesleyan's third
straight, which ties
the program mark for
consecutive wins.
Additionally, the
five victories are a
new program record,
as are the four
conference wins.
Townsend is also
rewriting the record
book from an
individual
perspective.
With one game left
on the schedule, he
has already
shattered season
records for past
attempts (226),
completions (124),
passing yards
(1,977), passing
touchdowns (14), and
passing efficiency
(144.37).
Townsend will lead
his Blue & Gold
squad into the final
game of 2006 on
Saturday at 1:00
p.m. when Wesleyan
hosts Greensboro
College at the Rocky
Mount Athletic
Complex.
