WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT:
Volleyball's Caitlin George
"setting" the stage for
success
Rocky
Mount, NC - There
are often unsung heroes on
every athletic team.
Reporters and fans tend to
only remember who had the
most goals, points, or
kills; no one remembers the
diving save made by the the
first baseman that saved a
run... or the blocked shot
that sparked a 10-0
basketball run... or
perhaps, the volleyball
setter that is quietly
approaching the Bishop
record for career assists in
just her third season.
The latter being junior
Caitlin George, who as of
Monday, has amassed 2,212
career assists and is a mere
70 shy of the career record.
In just
her third season, George has
made a name for herself as a
premier setter in the USA
South Conference. She
currently has 541 assists
this season, including a
season-high 51 this past
Tuesday versus Methodist.
With hitters Brittany Insley
and Sydney Bens garnering
much of the publicity with
Rookie of the Week and
All-Tournament accolades to
their credit this season,
George goes
about her business daily,
and with each assist, inches
closer setting a new mark.
This past
week, George led her Bishops
to two wins and narrowly
missed a third when Wesleyan
fell to Methodist in five
games. Having amassed
over 100 assists last week
alone, she is on pace to
break former Bishop Vivian
Vega's record within the
next three games. A
successful senior season
could, in fact, make the
junior captain the first
setter in Bishop history to
tally over 3,000 for her
career.
The
Bishops are now 6-13
overall. George and
her teammates will attempt
to make it three straight
wins when they
travel to Chowan University
on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m.
match-up with the Hawks.
