Wesleyan’s Thompson speaks at
Nike Coaches Clinic

- The North Carolina Wesleyan
Department of Athletics is
pleased to announce that head
men’s basketball coach John
Thompson was recently chosen to
speak at the Nike Fairfax Stars
Coaches Clinic in Fairfax,
Virginia. The October 7th
clinic featured 14 collegiate
coaches from various levels.
The only Division III coach to
be selected, Thompson spoke on point guard play.
Well-respected among his
coaching peers, Thompson’s
numerous accolades include
leading the Bishops to the 2002
Dixie Conference Tournament
Championship and the 2000
Regular Season Championship. In
1999-2000, he was named Dixie
Conference Coach of the Year,
while his 2002 squad advanced to
the NCAA Tournament.
Entering his 12th season with
the Bishops, Coach Thompson is
known for outstanding player
development.
Originally from Durham, North
Carolina, Thompson played
collegiately at St. Andrews
College and the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro.
The captain of his team as a
senior, he graduated from UNCG
in 1984 with a degree in
communications. After
graduation, he was invited to
try out with the Florida
Suncoast Stingers of the
Continental Basketball
Association (CBA).

University of Virginia,
assistant men’s coach Darrell
Brooks of George Washington
University, head women’s coach
Mike Peterson of Wake Forest
University, head women’s coach
Tom Garrick of Rhode Island
University, head women’s coach
Andy Landers of the University
of Georgia, assistant men’s
coach Kevin Broadus of
Georgetown University, and head
women’s coach Brenda Frese of
the University of Maryland, the
2006 NCAA National Champion.
Thompson and his Bishops will
open up the 2006-07 season this
coming Sunday when Wesleyan
begins practice at Everett
Gymnasium. The Bishops'
annual "Late Night Blue & White"
game is scheduled for October
28th at 10:00 p.m. More
