Bishop men and women suffer
hoops sweep at Methodist

- The North Carolina Wesleyan men’s and women’s
basketball squads suffered a league sweep at the
hands of homestanding Methodist University on Monday
night. In the opener, the Bishop women dropped
a 70-45 decision to the Lady Monarchs in falling to
4-9 overall, 1-6 in USA South action.
Wesleyan's men endured a similar fate in an 85-70
defeat and now stand at 8-8 on the season, 1-3 in
conference play.
In the women's game, Wesleyan
shot just 20 percent in the first half en route to a
36-20 halftime deficit. Though the Bishops
managed to improve offensively in the second period,
they would get no closer than 11 points.
Methodist (10-4, 6-1) held NCWC's
Essence Chambers scoreless for the first time this
season. Sophomore Nicole Williams managed a
season-high 17 points, while freshman Gretchen
Tobias chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Amanda Underwood led a balanced
Monarch attack with 10 points.
In the men's game, Methodist led
from start to finish, racing out to a 14-3 lead in
the first five minutes. The Bishops, however,
fought back and trailed by just five at the break,
35-30. The Monarchs responded with a 7-0 run
to start the second half and did not look back in
securing the 15-point win.
Senior Jarvis Cobb recorded a
team-high 17 points, while Lenny Hall and Adam
Coleman turned in 15 and 13 points, respectively.
LeuMichael Smith led four
Monarchs in double figures with a game-high 19
points.
Both teams will try to right the
ship on Wednesday night when Averett University
visits Everett Gymnasium. The women will
tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30
p.m.
