Bishop men and women suffer hoops sweep at Methodist

Fayetteville, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan men’s and women’s basketball squads suffered a league sweep at the hands of homestanding Methodist University on Monday night.  In the opener, the Bishop women dropped a 70-45 decision to the Lady Monarchs in falling to 4-9 overall, 1-6 in USA South action.  Wesleyan's men endured a similar fate in an 85-70 defeat and now stand at 8-8 on the season, 1-3 in conference play.

In the women's game, Wesleyan shot just 20 percent in the first half en route to a 36-20 halftime deficit.  Though the Bishops managed to improve offensively in the second period, they would get no closer than 11 points.

Methodist (10-4, 6-1) held NCWC's Essence Chambers scoreless for the first time this season.  Sophomore Nicole Williams managed a season-high 17 points, while freshman Gretchen Tobias chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

Amanda Underwood led a balanced Monarch attack with 10 points.

In the men's game, Methodist led from start to finish, racing out to a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes.  The Bishops, however, fought back and trailed by just five at the break, 35-30.  The Monarchs responded with a 7-0 run to start the second half and did not look back in securing the 15-point win.

Senior Jarvis Cobb recorded a team-high 17 points, while Lenny Hall and Adam Coleman turned in 15 and 13 points, respectively.

LeuMichael Smith led four Monarchs in double figures with a game-high 19 points.

Both teams will try to right the ship on Wednesday night when Averett University visits Everett Gymnasium.  The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
