WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT:
Wesleyan hoops announces two February community service
events
Rocky
Mount,
NC
- The men's and women's basketball teams of North
Carolina Wesleyan are pleased to announce two exciting
community service events that will be taking place during
the month of February. The first is their involvement
in Kay Yow's Hoops 4 Hunger, which will begin on February
1st and run through the 29th. The second is Wesleyan's
annual "Take a Kid to the Game" day, which is slated for
Saturday, February 9th. Information on both efforts is
provided below.
HOOPS 4 HUNGER
Hoops 4 Hunger, originally known as the
Big 4 ACC Canned Food and Funds Drive,
is a friendly (but fierce!) student-led
canned food and fundraising competition
between colleges and universities in
central and eastern North Carolina.
Hoops 4 Hunger aims to help re-stock
depleted Food Bank shelves by
encouraging school spirit and school
support of this collaborative, worthy
community service effort.
The Bishops will be
collecting cans and/or monetary donations at all of their
February home games, beginning this Saturday when our
women's team hosts Mary Baldwin. Other home dates
include February 3rd, 5th, 8th, 9th, 16th, and 18th.
Anyone donating five or more cans at each contest receives
free admission to that game. As always, those who
already receive free admission are encouraged to
participate.
if you do not
regularly attend basketball
games, please feel free to drop
by the Taylor Center at any time
to donate items. Also, Food
Bank has set up a virtual food
drive online. Simply click the
following link and select NC
Wesleyan as the institution to
which you would like to make
your donation. This same link
can be used to chart our
progress among the other
schools.

In the spirit of
competition, each school’s donations of food and funds will
be combined (funds will be multiplied by 5) for a final
donation total, then divided by the number of students
attending your school this semester for a per capita
total. The college or university that collects the highest
per capita total by February 29th will be deemed the winner.
The Food Bank will award a
Hoops 4 Hunger Winner's Trophy, and this will begin a
tradition that each year's winning school will have their
name and date engraved on the trophy. The winning school
also wins the honor of displaying the trophy at their school
throughout the year.
North Carolina State
University head coach Kay Yow is this year's honorary
chairperson.

TAKE A KID TO THE GAME
The Bishop basketball teams will also be sponsoring their
2008 "Take a Kid to the Game" day
on Saturday, February 9th when they host Shenandoah
University.
The women tip off at 2:00 p.m. followed
by the men at 4:00 p.m. in Everett
Gymnasium. Youth 12 and under will be
admitted free to both games and will
receive promotional materials and
posters upon arrival.
North Carolina
Wesleyan is hosting one of more than 700
games that will be played across the
nation this season as part of the "Take A
Kid to the Game" program. This project
is a grass roots initiative that
attracts the nation’s youth and
encourages adults to take kids to area
college basketball games.
