NCWC men and women fall to
Greensboro in USA South play
Greensboro, NC
- The men's and women's
basketball teams of
Greensboro College earned
a USA South sweep of NC
Wesleyan on Saturday
afternoon in Hanes Gym. In the
women's game, the Pride
led by as many as 21 in the
second half en route to a
69-52 victory, while in the
men's game, Greensboro
overcame a 14-point deficit
over the final five minutes
to steal a 69-68 victory.
On the
women's side, the Lady Pride
(21-1, 15-0 USAC) shot just
24 percent in the first
half, but they still managed
to take a 30-25 lead into
the break thanks to a
12-for-12 showing at the
charity stripe. The second
half saw the Bishops (5-17,
3-12 USAC) get no closer
than the halftime score as
Greensboro shot 52 percent
from the floor over the
final 20 minutes of play.
Ashley
Burnette paced the Pride with 10 points, while
Jordan Joyce pulled down
nine rebounds.
Essence
Chambers and Gretchen Tobias
tallied 13 and 11 points,
respectively, for the
Bishops. Tobias narrowly
missed a double-double with
nine boards.
In the
men's game, the Bishops fell
victim to two major runs at
the end of each half that
proved to be the difference
in the game. Wesleyan held a
40-22 advantage with 2:51
remaining in the first half
only to see Greensboro close
the period with an 11-0 run
for a 40-33 score at
intermission.
The
second half saw NCWC lead by
as many as 15 early in the
period, and the Bishops held
a 67-53 advantage with 5:13
left in regulation. The
Pride, however, closed the
game with a 16-1 run that
was capped by an Anthony
Simmons three-pointer with
28 seconds on the clock. The
long-distance shot proved to
be the eventual game-winner
as neither team would score
again.
Michael
Mitchell led the Pride with
16 points and 10 rebounds,
while Simmons finished with
15 points off the bench.
Wesleyan
was paced by Jarmel
Arrington's 17 points.
Freshman Domarius Thomas had
15 points, and senior Adam
Coleman pulled down a
team-high nine boards..
The
Bishops return to action on
Monday when they travel to
Methodist University. The
women are slated to tip off
at 5:30 p.m. followed by the
men at 7:30 p.m.
