NCWC men and women fall to Greensboro in USA South play

Greensboro, NC - The men's and women's basketball teams of Greensboro College earned a USA South sweep of NC Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Hanes Gym.  In the women's game, the Pride led by as many as 21 in the second half en route to a 69-52 victory, while in the men's game, Greensboro overcame a 14-point deficit over the final five minutes to steal a 69-68 victory.

On the women's side, the Lady Pride (21-1, 15-0 USAC) shot just 24 percent in the first half, but they still managed to take a 30-25 lead into the break thanks to a 12-for-12 showing at the charity stripe. The second half saw the Bishops (5-17, 3-12 USAC) get no closer than the halftime score as Greensboro shot 52 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play.

Ashley Burnette paced the Pride with 10 points, while Jordan Joyce pulled down nine rebounds.

Essence Chambers and Gretchen Tobias tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Bishops. Tobias narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards.

In the men's game, the Bishops fell victim to two major runs at the end of each half that proved to be the difference in the game. Wesleyan held a 40-22 advantage with 2:51 remaining in the first half only to see Greensboro close the period with an 11-0 run for a 40-33 score at intermission.

The second half saw NCWC lead by as many as 15 early in the period, and the Bishops held a 67-53 advantage with 5:13 left in regulation. The Pride, however, closed the game with a 16-1 run that was capped by an Anthony Simmons three-pointer with 28 seconds on the clock. The long-distance shot proved to be the eventual game-winner as neither team would score again.

Michael Mitchell led the Pride with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Simmons finished with 15 points off the bench.

Wesleyan was paced by Jarmel Arrington's 17 points. Freshman Domarius Thomas had 15 points, and senior Adam Coleman pulled down a team-high nine boards..

The Bishops return to action on Monday when they travel to Methodist University. The women are slated to tip off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
