WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT: Volleyball to host Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness event

Rocky Mount, NC - This fall, hundreds of volleyball teams will be participating in and/or hosting Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness events throughout the month of October.  Both high school and college teams from around the country will be promoting breast health by raising funds to help eradicate cancer. Head Coach Robin Pietryk is pleased to announce that North Carolina Wesleyan has joined this initiative by designating the Bishops' game versus Chowan University as “Dig Pink” night in Everett Gymnasium.

Battling Bishop players will show their support by wearing pink shoelaces and using pink towels. Dig Pink attendees are encouraged to wear pink in the stands and can contribute monetarily to the cause by making donations in the Everett Gymnasium lobby. Those who are unable to be in attendance can make donations online site at http://www.sideoutvolleyball.org/mainevent/minievent/NCWesleyanColle/.

The proceeds from all donations will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) located in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. Side-Out has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Breast Cancer research nationally through volleyball tournaments, clinics, and rallies.  Funds are currently devoted to targeted therapies and molecular profiling.

Their name underscores the purpose of the organization – “Side-Out” in volleyball occurs when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. Likewise in the war against breast cancer, the Side-Out Foundation will support health care professionals in their pursuit of practical solutions for women and men with this dreaded disease thus enabling those affected to regain control of their lives and living them to the fullest.

For more information about the event, please contact Rikki Rich, NCWC Sports Information Director at rcrich@ncwc.edu or 252-985-5271.
