CNU clinches USA
South softball title with Bishop
sweep

Christopher
Newport's
softball squad,
ranked 10th in
the nation,
swept North
Carolina
Wesleyan on
Wednesday
afternoon,
clinching the
USA South
regular season
title in the
process.
The Lady
Captains, who
won by 7-5 and
10-2 scores,
also secured the
#1 seed in next
week's USA South
Tournament.
The Bishops are
now
18-10 overall
and finish 7-7
in conference
play.
In game one, Janet Fairchild
improved to 12-1 on the year by
tossing six innings for the
Captains. She allowed three runs
(one earned) on five hits, while
walking one and striking out four.
Libby Fulford (13-6) took the loss
for Wesleyan, giving up seven runs
(five earned) on six hits in a
complete game effort.
Margit Severin was 2-for-3 with two
RBI and Jamie Jansen finished
2-for-3 with a run scored for CNU,
while Ashlee Bass and Hannah Hardy
each had two hits for the Bishops.
In game two, Christopher Newport won
10-2 in five innings.
Kristen Bruce went the distance to
pick up her ninth win of the year.
The freshman allowed two runs on
three hits, walked one and whiffed
five. Karen Hathcock took the
loss for Wesleyan.
The
Bishops will return to action at
home on Friday when they host
Guilford College. Game one is
slated for 2:00 p.m. at Edge Field.
