Bass sets career hits record, softball splits with Meredith

Raleigh, NC - Senior Ashlee Bass became North Carolina Wesleyan's career hits leader on Tuesday afternoon, recording her 178th as a Bishop in game two of NCWC's USA South opening doubleheader at Meredith College. Bass (pictured), who entered the game with 176, recorded both a double and single in the Bishops' nine-run fourth inning to tie and break the record. More importantly, Wesleyan was able to salvage the split with a 14-5 victory after dropping game one 8-5. The Bishops are now 8-4 overall, 1-1 in league play.

After scoring eight runs over the first three innings of game one, the Avenging Angels (6-10, 1-1) looked poised to record the sweep by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Arielle Stout highlighted the inning with a two-run homerun to right field.

The Bishops got on the board with an unearned run in the third and then erupted for nine runs in the fourth. Bass led off the inning with a double and later delivered a two-run single that gave her the record. Wesleyan tallied 10 hits in the inning as a team.

NCWC tacked on four more runs in the fifth. Bass and freshman Brittany Nichols connected on back-to-back homers to highlight the frame as the Bishops moved in front 14-4 at that point. Meredith did manage one run in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough as the game was called after five.

Libby Fulford (5-2) earned the win, allowing five runs on nine hits and striking out five. Fulford also took the loss in game one, while Stout picked up the win for the Angels.

The Bishops tallied 16 hits as a team in game two, led by Bass' 3-for-4 performance. Whitney Moshier, Chelsea Gentry, Payton Gordon, Jessica Poindexter, and Fulford all had two hits apiece.

Wesleyan returns to action at Guilford College on Thursday. The doubleheader is slated for a 3:00 p.m. start in Greensboro.
