Softball Bishops sweep Guilford, drop two at Shenandoah

Winchester, VA - The North Carolina Wesleyan softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep at Guilford College on Thursday afternoon, downing the Quakers by 12-1 and 6-5 scores. Unfortunately, the Bishops suffered a twinbill sweep at the hands of league foe Shenandoah on Friday by 8-0 and 9-0 scores. Wesleyan is now 10-6 overall, 1-3 in USA South play.

In the opener at Guilford, the Bishops broke open a 3-1 game with two runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh en route to the 12-1 win. Ashlee Bass put the Bishops on the board with a two-run triple in the guests' three-run third inning.

The Quakers got their run in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Morgan Freyer, but the Bishops scored on a wild pitch and RBI-single by Carla Pridgen in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Libby Fulford delivered a three-run triple in the Bishops' seventh as the visitors sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame.

In game two, Kelly Guarnieri's two-run single in the second gave the Quakers a shortlived 5-3 lead. The Bishops tied the game the very next inning when Whitney Moshier delivered a two-out, two-run single of her own.

Neither team could break the 5-5 tie as the game went into extra innings. Pridgen scored on a Quakers' error in the top of the eighth, and Fulford threw two innings of scoreless relief as the Bishops completed the sweep.

Sophomore Tiffany McCord earned the win in game one, while Fulford picked up the game two victory.

At Shenandoah, Hornet pitchers dominated play by tossing two two-hit shutouts in 8-0 and 9-0 SU wins, respectively. Fulford (6-3) and McCord (1-1) each suffered losses.

Wesleyan returns to action at home on Wednesday when USA South rival Peace College visits Edge Field. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
