NCWC volleyball sweeps Guilford College on the road, 3-0

Greensboro, NC - Setter Caitlin George had 36 assists and freshman Brittany Insley put away 18 kills, leading North Carolina Wesleyan to a 3-0 volleyball sweep at Guilford College Thursday night.  Game scores were  30-27, 30-21, 30-28.  The Bishops improve to 5-13 with the non-conference win, while the Quakers drop to 2-13.

The Bishops set the tone with a narrow win in the opening set.  Wesleyan led 24-19 before Guilford rallied to tie the contest at 25.  Following a Bishops' time-out, George recorded a kill off a Guilford service and North Carolina Wesleyan took advantage of three Guilford errors for a 30-28 victory. Insley had five of her kills and George set up eight assists in the opening game.

George had 13 assists and Sydney Bens made six of her 11 kills on .455 hitting in the second set, which featured seven ties and two lead changes. After falling behind by four points, Guilford pulled to within 19-18 before North Carolina put the match away. April Wilson served the Bishops' final four points of the second set.

North Carolina Wesleyan appeared to have the third set in hand after jumping to a 17-11 advantage, but the Quakers rallied again thanks to strong serving by Taylor Brown and Bethany Hawks and tied the match at 27. Insley responded with back-to-back kills and George clinched the match with her seventh and final kill of the evening.

George hit .500 on the night and added six digs for the Bishops.  Bens paced the visitors with 18 digs, while libero Cristin Jones added 16 pickups.

Becca Jones had 20 assists, plus four kills and eight digs for Guilford.  Jenny Conner and Katie Spina led the Quakers with six kills apiece.

The Bishops return to action at home on Sunday when they host Mary Baldwin College.  Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Everett Gym.
