George breaks career assists record in 3-2 Bishop win

Fayetteville, NC - With 46 assists on Tuesday night, junior setter Caitlin George broke the North Carolina Wesleyan career assists mark in a 3-2 Bishop win over Methodist College.  George (pictured), who entered the match needing 36 to tie the previous record of 2,282 held by Vivian Vega, has now amassed 2,292 during her three-year career with the Bishops.  More importantly, Wesleyan earned its fourth straight win and its first USA South victory of the season.  Scores from the match were 30-16, 31-29, 20-30, 24-30, and 15-11.

The Bishops are now 8-13 overall, 1-7 in league play.  With the loss, Methodist now stands at 8-13 on the season, 3-5 in conference action.

Trying to avenge a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Methodist earlier in the season, Wesleyan jumped out to a quick 2-0 match lead with wins in games one and two.

Game one saw the Bishops dominate and record a .353 hitting percentage to a -.086 percentage for the Monarchs.  NCWC squeaked out the 31-29 win in game two only to see Methodist battle back to take games three and four.

It was in game four that George moved into first place in the record book.  The junior from Derwood, MD entered the game with 30 assists in the match, and the record-breaking assist came on a Brittany Insley kill midway through.

The Bishops never trailed in the fifth and deciding game.  George served Wesleyan to a 4-0 lead, and Methodist got no closer than two points the rest of the way.  As a team, NCWC tallied eight kills against only one hitting error in the game.

Insley finished with a game-high 24 kills in the match, while Sydney Bens added 17.  Bens and Cristin Jones anchored the defensive effort with 16 and 13 digs, respectively.  Sara Yeatman paced the Monarchs with a team-high 18 kills.

The Bishops return to action on Saturday when they host a tri-match with St. Mary's College (MD) and Chowan University. Wesleyan will face SMC at 9:00 a.m. and CU at 1:00 p.m.
