Bishop volleyball sweeps Chowan,
falls to St. Mary's

- The North Carolina Wesleyan
volleyball squad had its four-game
winning streak snapped by St. Mary's
(MD) on Saturday morning in a 3-1
loss, but the Bishops rebounded to
sweep Chowan University later in the
afternoon by a 3-0 score.
Freshman Brittany Insley tallied 40
kills in the two contests to pace
the Bishops, who are now 9-14 on the
season.
Prior to the first match, Wesleyan
honored junior setter Caitlin George
who, on Tuesday at Methodist, became
the Bishops' all-time career leader
in assists.
In
the first game of the Tri-Match, St.
Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead over
Wesleyan with 30-21 and 32-30 wins
in games one and two. The
Bishops rebounded to take game three
31-29 and held a 25-23 lead in game
four. The Seahawks, however,
pushed five straight points to go up
28-25 and took the game and match by
a 30-26 score.
Insley recorded 22 kills and 20 digs
in the match, while George tallied
44 assists. Sydney Bens and
Cristin Jones notched 19 and 11
digs, respectively, while senior
April Wilson recorded seven blocks.
St.
Mary's went on to sweep Chowan in
the second game of the day by a 3-0
score.
The
final game of the Tri-Match saw the
Bishops sweep the Hawks for the
second time in as many weeks.
Scores from the match were 30-13,
30-15, and 30-23. Insley again
led Wesleyan with 18 kills, while
senior Liana Poyer added 11.
Bens anchored the defensive effort
with 17 digs.
The Bishops
return to action on Wednesday when
they host USA South rival
Christopher Newport. Game time
is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Everett
Gym.
