Bishop volleyball sweeps Chowan, falls to St. Mary's

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan volleyball squad had its four-game winning streak snapped by St. Mary's (MD) on Saturday morning in a 3-1 loss, but the Bishops rebounded to sweep Chowan University later in the afternoon by a 3-0 score.  Freshman Brittany Insley tallied 40 kills in the two contests to pace the Bishops, who are now 9-14 on the season.

Prior to the first match, Wesleyan honored junior setter Caitlin George who, on Tuesday at Methodist, became the Bishops' all-time career leader in assists.

In the first game of the Tri-Match, St. Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Wesleyan with 30-21 and 32-30 wins in games one and two.  The Bishops rebounded to take game three 31-29 and held a 25-23 lead in game four.  The Seahawks, however, pushed five straight points to go up 28-25 and took the game and match by a 30-26 score.

Insley recorded 22 kills and 20 digs in the match, while George tallied 44 assists.  Sydney Bens and Cristin Jones notched 19 and 11 digs, respectively, while senior April Wilson recorded seven blocks.

St. Mary's went on to sweep Chowan in the second game of the day by a 3-0 score.

The final game of the Tri-Match saw the Bishops sweep the Hawks for the second time in as many weeks.  Scores from the match were 30-13, 30-15, and 30-23.  Insley again led Wesleyan with 18 kills, while senior Liana Poyer added 11.  Bens anchored the defensive effort with 17 digs.

The Bishops return to action on Wednesday when they host USA South rival Christopher Newport.  Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Everett Gym.
