Wesleyan volleyball sweeps
Shenandoah on Senior Night, 3-0

- The North Carolina Wesleyan
volleyball squad celebrated Senior
Night in style on Friday night,
sweeping visiting Shenandoah
University by a 3-0 score in Everett
Gymnasium. Game scores were
30-23, 30-12, and 30-22.
Seniors Cristin Jones, Liana Poyer,
Casey Spivey, and April Wilson
combined for 13 kills, 20 digs, two
service aces and six blocks to pace
the Bishops. With the win, Wesleyan
moves to 11-17 overall, 2-10 in USA
South play. The Hornets are
now 13-12 on the season and also
2-10 in league action.
Game one saw the
Bishops tally 19 kills as a team
with freshman Brittany Insley doing
most of the damage with 10 of her
own. Wesleyan trailed only
once in the game at 7-6.
In game two, the
Bishops recorded their highest
single game hitting percentage of
the match at .407. The Hornets
recorded their lowest at .030,
leading to the 30-12 NCWC win.
Game three proved
to be the closest of the match with
Wesleyan holding a slim 24-21 lead
down the stretch. The Bishops,
however, recorded kills on four of
the next six points to seal the
three-game sweep. Poyer ended
the game and match with her eighth
kill of the night.
As a team,
Wesleyan hit a solid .330 in the
match, recording 47 kills against
just 12 errors. The Hornets
turned in a .121 hitting percentage
as a team.
Insley recorded a
game-high 20 kills, and Sydney Bens
added 11 for the Bishops.
Setter Caitlin George notched 40
assists and 13 digs in a solid
effort, while Wilson finished with
five kills and four blocks.
Jones tallied a game-high 14 digs
defensively.
For Shenandoah,
Michelle Chandler recorded a
team-high 12 kills and 17 assists.
Jennifer Thompson anchored the
Hornet defense with 14 digs.
Wesleyan
will host five USA South games on
Saturday. The Bishops will
take on Ferrum College at 9:30 a.m.
and Peace College at 7:30 p.m.
Tomorrow will serve as 2006 Parent's
Day.
