George breaks season assist record in 3-1 win over Peace

Rocky Mount, NC - Junior setter Caitlin George, who two weeks ago became North Carolina Wesleyan’s all-time career assist leader, broke yet another record over the weekend.  With 42 assists in a 3-1 win over Peace College on Saturday night, George (pictured) set a new single-season assist mark with her 976th of the year.  Teammate Sydney Bens aided in the effort with a game-high 20 kills. The win was the Bishops’ third in four matches and wrapped up their 2006 regular season slate.

Game scores against Peace were 30-25, 30-26, 25-30, and 30-23.  The Bishops jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match, only to see Peace rally for a game three win.

Freshman Brittany Insley recorded 17 kills, 21 digs and seven blocks for the Bishops.  George turned in a team-high 22 digs of her own, while Cristin Jones and Bens tallied 19 and 17 digs, respectively.  Seniors April Wilson notched 11 kills and five blocks in a solid performance.

Earlier in the day, Wesleyan dropped a heartbreaking 3-1 match to Ferrum College by 25-30, 30-28, 32-30, and 33-31 scores.  Insley had 27 kills and George 48 assists in the losing effort.  Jones anchored the Bishop defense with 20 digs, while Wilson added a team-high five blocks.

The Bishops honored 2006 Parent’s Day prior to the match.

Wesleyan (12-18, 3-11) will be the #6 seed in next week’s USA South Conference Tournament.  The Bishops will travel to 3rd-seeded Greensboro on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with the Pride.
