George breaks season assist
record in 3-1 win over Peace

- Junior setter Caitlin George,
who two weeks ago became North
Carolina Wesleyan’s all-time
career assist leader, broke yet
another record over the
weekend. With 42 assists
in a 3-1 win over
Peace College on
Saturday night, George
(pictured) set a new
single-season assist mark with
her 976th of the year. Teammate
Sydney Bens aided in the effort
with a game-high 20 kills. The
win was the Bishops’ third in
four matches and wrapped up
their 2006 regular season slate.
Game scores against Peace were
30-25, 30-26, 25-30, and 30-23.
The Bishops jumped out to an
early 2-0 lead in the match,
only to see Peace rally for a
game three win.
Freshman Brittany Insley
recorded 17 kills, 21 digs and
seven blocks for the Bishops.
George turned in a team-high 22
digs of her own, while Cristin
Jones and Bens tallied 19 and 17
digs, respectively. Seniors
April Wilson notched 11 kills
and five blocks in a solid
performance.
Earlier in the day, Wesleyan
dropped a heartbreaking 3-1
match to Ferrum College by
25-30, 30-28, 32-30, and 33-31
scores. Insley had 27 kills and
George 48 assists in the losing
effort. Jones anchored the
Bishop defense with 20 digs,
while Wilson added a team-high
five blocks.
The Bishops honored 2006
Parent’s Day prior to the match.
Wesleyan (12-18, 3-11) will be
the #6 seed in next week’s USA
South Conference Tournament.
The Bishops will travel to
3rd-seeded Greensboro on Tuesday
for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with
the Pride.
