Bishop volleyball opens '06 slate at
Virginia Wesleyan

- The 2006 volleyball season got
underway this weekend when the
Bishops traveled to Virginia
Wesleyan for the Wingate
Invitational. NC Wesleyan
dropped four contests by 3-0 scores,
dropping matches to the host Marlins
and Thomas More on Friday before
falling to Denison and Gwynedd Mercy
on Saturday. Freshman Brittany
Insley made a solid collegiate debut
with 36 kills over the two-day
tournament, picking up
All-Tournament accolades.
Against Virginia Wesleyan,
Insley turned in
a team-high 12 kills and five digs.
Junior Caitlin George added 18
assists and five digs, while Ashley
Fletcher collected an impressive
nine block assists. Game
scores were 30-11, 30-21, and 30-16.
In the Thomas More game, Insley
recorded three kills and two block
assists, while George turned in 12
assists. Defensively, freshman
Alexcia Johnson had eight digs and
April Wilson five blocks. Game
scores were 30-13, 30-19, and 30-20.
On Saturday, Denison swept the
Bishops by 30-14, 30-18, and 30-22
scores. Insley again paced
Wesleyan with nine kills, while
Wilson added six.
In the
tournament's final game and for the
second time in two days, Insley
turned in 12 kills and Liana Poyer
seven. George distributed 26
assists, while defensively Casey
Spivey, Cristin Jones, and Insley
each had 10 digs. Gwynedd
Mercy defeated Wesleyan by 30-26,
30-24, and 30-26 scores.
The Bishops open
up their home slate on Tuesday night
when they host Meredith College in
Everett Gym. Game time is
slated for 6:30 p.m.
