Wesleyan volleyball falls to Guilford College, 3-1

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan volleyball squad fell to Guilford College by a 3-1 score on Thursday night in Everett Gymnasium.  Game scores were 30-27, 18-30, 30-28, and 30-25.  The Bishops had no answer for Quaker outside hitter Haley Ortmann, who tallied a game-high 28 kills in the match.  Wesleyan is now 9-8 overall, while Guilford ups it record to 4-10 on the season.

The Quakers recorded an impressive 22 kills in game one to take a 1-0 match lead.  The Bishops, however, looked dominant in game two by turning in 14 kills against just three errors.  Their 30-18 win knotted the match at one game apiece.

Game three proved to be pivotal in the outcome of the match.  Wesleyan looked to be in control and held its biggest leads at 13-5 and 19-12.   Unfortunately, the Bishops could not finish out the win.  After battling back to tie the game at 28-28, back-to-back kills by Ortmann and Anna Miller gave the Quakers the win and momentum.

Game four then saw Guilford record 17 kills to the Bishops' 11 en route to the 30-25 game and match victory.

In addition to Ortmann's 28 kills, Miller and Katie Spina added 18 and 10, respectively.  Becca Jones talled 60 assists, while Kaci Loeffler chipped in a team-high 18 digs.

For the Bishops, freshman Alyssa Balzano tallied 15 kills.  Sydney Bens and Kelly George each recorded 19 digs on the night.

The Bishops return to USA South action on Saturday when they host a conference Play Day.  Wesleyan's first match will be at 11:00 a.m. against Ferrum College, followed by a match-up with Averett University later in the evening.
