Battling Bishops fall to
Randolph-Macon on Dig Pink Night, 3-1
Rocky
Mount, NC
- On Dig Pink Night in Everett
Gymnasium, the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College
overcame a 25-23 first set loss to steal a come-from-behind
3-1 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan in non-conference
volleyball action. The loss snaps the Battling Bishops'
seven-game winning streak and leaves them with a 19-10
overall record. With the win, RMC moves to 21-5
overall.
Tied 17-17 in the first
set, the Bishops reeled off five straight points behind the
strong serving of junior Alyssa Balzano to pull away for the
victory. The Yellow Jackets, however, opened the second set
with a 10-0 run that seemed to set the tone for the rest of
the match. RMC used that momentum to secure 25-17, 25-19,
and 25-15 wins over the final three sets.
The Jackets were led by
Jessica Sears with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 18
digs. Raena Winton and April Hines recorded 12 and 11 kills,
respectively, while Savanna Love had 22 assists.
For the Bishops, Leslie
Hassell and Meredith Smith turned in nine kills apiece, and
Mackenzie Tingle dished out 35 assists. Kelly George
led the defensive effort with a team-high 15 digs on the
night.
As a team, Randolph-Macon
recorded 59 kills to the Bishops' 40 and hit .222 in the
match. Wesleyan won the blocking battle 12-10, but the
Jackets were helped out by eight service aces.
The Bishops return to
action on Wednesday when they travel to Methodist University
for a 7:00 p.m. USA South match-up with the Monarchs.
