Bishop women drop close game at Meredith, 61-54

Raleigh, NC - Seniors April Wilson and J.D. Richardson turned in 15 and 12 points, respectively, on Thursday night, but it was not enough as the Bishop women of North Carolina Wesleyan fell on the road at Meredith by a 61-54 score.  Now winners of two straight, the Angel victory avenges an earlier season loss to the Bishops.  With the loss, Wesleyan drops to 4-16 overall.

The first half featured five ties and saw the Bishops lead by as many as six, 24-18, with just over six minutes remaining in the period.  Meredith, however, closed the half with a 15-4 run to take a five-point lead into the break, 33-28. The Angel run was capped by a Nicole Hall three-pointer as time expired.

The second half was again a see-saw battle, and Wesleyan managed to take 51-48 lead on a Shameika Faircloth jumper with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the Bishops, Meredith again closed out the period with a crucial 13-3 run that put the game out of reach.

The Angels were led by Hall's 31 points, six rebounds, and six steals.

Wilson and Richardson were the Bishops' lone double-figure scorers.  Faircloth and Lawanda Scott each chipped in eight points, while Liz Ansley dished out six assists and collected five steals.  Junior Cheyenne Hall grabbed a team-high six boards.

The difference in the game came at the free throw line where Meredith knocked down 91.7 percent of its attempts (11-of-12) compared the NCWC's 53.4 percent (7-of-13).  The Angels also won the battle of the boards 33-26.

The Bishops return to USA South play on Saturday at Greensboro.  Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
