Bishop women
earn first win of season
at Salem, 57-51
Winston-Salem,
NC - The
women's basketball team
of North Carolina
Wesleyan earned its
first win of the 2006-07
season on Tuesday night,
downing Salem College by
a 57-51 score on the
road. Freshman Shameika
Faircloth led three
Bishops in
double-figures with a
career-high 13 points.
Both Wesleyan and Salem
are now 1-2 to start the
season.
The
first half saw numerous
lead changes with the
Spirits gaining their
final lead of the
contest with 33 seconds
to go in the period. The
two squads went into the
break tied 28-28.
The
Bishops never trailed in
the second half.
Salem's Alexandrea Ervin
made a free throw with
1:21 remaining in
regulation to pull Salem
within three points, but
the Spirits would get no
closer as Wesleyan hung
on down the stretch to
secure their first
victory of the season.
In
addition to Faircloth's 13
points, junior Lawanda Scott
managed 12 points and six
rebounds. Senior J.D.
Richardson added 10 points
to round out Wesleyan's
double-figure scorers.
The
Spirits, who were plagued by
turnovers and poor free
throw shooting throughout
the game, were led by
Shakila Springs' 13 points.
Michala Michaux and
Alexandrea Ervin chipped in
with 11 and 10 points,
respectively, while Lauren
Redman led the team in
rebounding with seven on the
night.
The
Bishops will now break for
Thanksgiving before opening
their home slate on Monday
night against Meredith
College. Tip-off is slated
for 7:00 p.m. in Everett
Gym.
