Chambers nets 30, Bishops cruise to 18-point win over MBC

Rocky Mount, NC - Junior Essence Chambers netted a season-high 30 points on Saturday afternoon, leading her North Carolina Wesleyan women's basketball squad to a 75-57 win over Mary Baldwin College in Everett Gymnasium. Chambers (pictured) knocked down a key three pointer as time expired in the first half to give the Bishops a 13-point lead at the break, and she went on to score 17 more points in the second period to secure the victory.  The win snaps Wesleyan's six-game losing streak and gives the Bishops a 5-10 overall record, including a 2-7 mark in USA South action.

Mary Baldwin (7-9, 4-6) jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the first five minutes of play.  Wesleyan fought back to tie the game at 13-13 thanks to eight points in a two-minute span by sophomore Courtney Brown.  Brown's second three-pointer of the game actually gave the Bishops their first lead at 16-13 with 9:47 remaining.  They would not trail again.

Wesleyan began to pull away and held its biggest lead of the period on Chambers' three-pointer at the buzzer.  The 36-23 advantage at the half was extended to as much as 20 at one point in the final period.  The Squirrels never got any closer than nine.

As a team, the Bishops shot 57 percent in the second half.  Chambers' 30 led all scorers, while Nicole Williams chipped in 15 points and five assists.  Freshman Desiree' Driver and Gretchen Tobias each pulled down eight rebounds.

For MBC, Jessica Carter finished with 13 points and five assists. Kara Hawkins added double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

Wesleyan continues its current homestand on Sunday when Ferrum College visits Everett Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
