Bishops fall to Lady Hornets in USA South action, 61-48

Rocky Mount, NC - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 61-48 USA South Conference victory over host North Carolina Wesleyan. The victory, which completed a season sweep over NCWC (7-12, 4-9), gives SU (7-11, 5-6) a one-game lead over the Bishops and Mary Baldwin in the conference standings. The top eight teams in the 10-team league make the post-season tournament.

Sophomore Alexis Hargbol led the Hornets to victory with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while teammate Katherine Flint added 17 points.

The contest was a see-saw battle, with the two teams trading the lead 12 times and being tied on seven other occasions. Shenandoah took its final lead when Hargbol gave her club a 33-32 lead at the 15:21 mark of the second half.

Wesleyan stayed close after Hargbol finished off the fast-break layup, never trailing by more than five points and getting to within one point after Essence Chambers nailed a three-pointer with 8:16 remaining.

Unfortunately for the home fans, this would be the Bishops high-water mark. Whitney French drained a three-ball on the Hornets next trip down the floor, starting an 11-2 run, and SU coasted home to the victory.

Shenandoah shot 41.5 percent from the floor for the game and held a 46-39 rebounding advantage.

Chambers led all scorers with 22 points.

Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday night at Christopher Newport.  Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Newport News.
