Stevens
Tip-Off Tournament
Hoboken,
NJ
- The North Carolina Wesleyan
women's basketball team opened up
its 2007-08 schedule over the
weekend at the Stevens Institute of
Technology Tip-Off Tournament. The Bishops
dropped two games, falling by a
57-37 score on Saturday afternoon to host
Stevens before dropping a close 67-58
contest to New Jersey City in
Sunday's consolation game.
Freshman Desiree' Driver (pictured)
averaged 12 points and eight
rebounds per game in the tournament,
connecting on 9-of-9 attempts from the floor against NJCU.
On
Friday, Stevens forged a 33-21 lead
at the break and overcame a poor shooting performance in the
second half to secure the win.
To the Ducks' advantage, the Bishops
shot just 25 percent
from the floor in the game.
Driver, Essence Chambers,
and Courtney Brown each had six points for Wesleyan.
Freshman Gretchen Tobias pulled down a team-high seven
rebounds. On Saturday, the Bishops managed a 26-21 halftime lead as their defense held the
Knights to just 20 percent shooting from the floor. The
final period, however, saw NJCU
out-score the Bishops 46-32 en route
to the 9-point come-from-behind victory.
Driver again led NCWC with a
game-high 18 points, while senior
Cheyenne Hall tallied her first double-double of the season
with 14 points and 10 boards. Hall also recorded four
assists, two blocks, and two steals in a solid all-around
performance.
For her efforts this
weekend, Driver was named to the All-Tournament team.
The
Bishops (0-2) will travel to Salem
College on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m.
match-up with the Spirits. NCWC
