Wesleyan hoopsters come from behind to
down Chowan, 48-46
Rocky Mount,
NC
- North Carolina Wesleyan earned a
thrilling come-from-behind victory on Sunday afternoon,
downing Chowan University 48-46 in women's basketball action
at Everett Gymnasium. The Bishops overcame a 12-point
deficit in the second half behind the stellar play of senior
Cheyenne Hall. Hall (pictured) finished with her third
double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bishops improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Hawks
drop to 1-3 overall.
The Bishops and Hawks
fought to a 19-19 tie at the half as both teams struggled to
find an offensive rhythm. Each team knocked down eight
attempts and shot close to 30 percent from the floor, while
CU held the period's biggest lead at 15-10 with 7:21
remaining. A jumper by junior Essence Chambers at the
buzzer completed Wesleyan's comeback and knotted the score
for the third time in the game.
Chowan opened the second
half with 7-0 run to go up 26-19 less than three minutes in.
The Bishops got their first bucket on a put-back by Hall, but the Hawks kept the momentum and forged
their biggest lead at 39-27.
Wesleyan, however, would
not go down without a fight. The Bishops put together an
impressive 10-0 run of their own to pull within two points
with 7:24 left in regulation. The final seven minutes
would see six ties and three lead changes.
Down 46-45, Hall gave
Wesleyan the lead with two clutch free throws with 37
seconds left. On the ensuing possession, freshman
Gretchen Tobias pulled down a Hawk missed jumper and was
fouled. Tobias calmly knocked down 1-of-2 attempts to
put NCWC on top 48-46 with 17 seconds remaining.
The Bishop defense then
shut the door as Hall's 14th rebound of the game sealed the
two-point victory.
In addition to Hall's
performance, Chambers and Desiree' Driver chipped
in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Tobias had a solid
all-around game with seven points, nine boards, four
assists, and three steals.
For Chowan, AJ O'Bannion
had 17 points and seven rebounds. Keyon Sellers was
the only other Hawk in double figures with 10 points.
Wesleyan finished 18-of-56
from the floor (32%), while Chowan knocked down 18-of-48
attempts (38%). Both teams were 1-of-11 from downtown.
The difference in the game
came at the free throw line where the Bishops connected on
two more attempts than the Hawks. NCWC also out-rebounded CU
42-34 in the game.
Wesleyan now breaks for the
holidays before returning to action at home on January 6th
versus Salem College. Tip-Off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
in Everett Gymnasium.
