Bishop women win third straight, defeat Salem 69-57

Rocky Mount, NC - In Sunday afternoon women's basketball action, head coach John Brackett's Battling Bishops picked up their third straight win with a 69-57 defeat of Salem College in Everett Gymnasium. Freshman Desiree' Driver (pictured) led the way with a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds.  With the victory, Wesleyan improves to 3-2 on the season.

The first half saw the Spirits come out on fire.  Salem managed a nine-point lead at 26-17 with 8:11 remaining thanks to the hot shooting of Kelsey Rector.  Rector knocked down three treys in the period, while Casey Jones netted 13 points of her own.

The Bishops fought back to out-score their opponents 12-5 over the final eight minutes to pull with two at the break, 31-29.  NCWC junior Essence Chambers had nine points in the half.

In the second period, Salem again upped its lead to nine on two occasions but could never quite put Wesleyan away.  The Bishops hung around, and a basket by Driver at the 6:48 mark gave them their first lead of the half, 49-48.

Wesleyan then put together a 20-9 run down the stretch for the the 69-57 final.

In addition to Driver's performance, Chambers notched 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Senior Cheyenne Hall also chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Bishops, who shot 42 percent from the floor as a team.

For Salem, Casey Jones tallied a game-high 22 points, while Rector finished with 14.  Shakila Springs pulled down 10 rebounds to lead all players.
