Wesleyan hoopsters drop USA South opener at Meredith
Raleigh,
NC
- The women's basketball team of
North Carolina Wesleyan dropped its USA South Conference
opener on Thursday night, falling to host Meredith College
by a 62-47 score in Raleigh. Wesleyan played even with
the Angels in the second half but could not overcome a poor
shooting performance in the opening period. The loss snaps
the Bishops three-game winning streak and leaves Wesleyan
with a 3-3 overall record.
The Bishops' Nicole Williams knocked down the game's first
basket to give NCWC a quick 2-0 lead. Meredith,
however, answered with a three-pointer by Brittany Cornelius
to up 3-2, and the Angels would never trail again.
Wesleyan shot just 19 percent from the floor in the first
half en route to a 15-point halftime deficit, 28-13.
In the second half,
Wesleyan managed to pull within eight points with just over
10 minutes left in regulation only to see the Angels put
together a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to go up 21.
Although the two teams fought to a 34-34 second half tie,
the aforementioned run essentially put the game out of
reach.
Junior Essence Chambers
paced the Bishops with a team-high 12 points, while freshman
Gretchen Tobias collected eight rebounds.
For Meredith, Cornelius
recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.
Whitley Turner and Nicole Hall finished with 12 and 11
points, respectively. The difference in the game came from
behind the arc where the Angels knocked down 9-of-13
attempts.
Wesleyan travels to Chowan
University on Sunday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. match-up with
the Hawks. The Bishops defeated CU 48-46 earlier in
the season.
