Shenandoah women steal 60-57 win over Battling Bishops

Winchester, VA - The Shenandoah University women’ s basketball team earned its first USA South Conference victory of the 2007-08 season Saturday afternoon with a 60-57 win over North Carolina Wesleyan in Winchester.  The Hornets (3-7, 1-2) found themselves trailing the Bishops (4-5, 1-2) by as many as 12 points early in the contest but stormed back for the victory.

Shenandoah got back into the game with a 19-5 run over the final 8:07 of the first half. Katherine Flint started the spurt with a three-pointer before giving her club its first lead of the game on a jumper with 3:56 left in the period.

The Hornets maintained an advantage until Wesleyan took its first lead of the second half with an 8-2 run from the 16:25 to 14:21 marks. From this point on, the two teams remained with four points of one another the rest of the way.

The Bishops last led with 4:51 left; SU’s Alexis Hargbol answered with a stickback in the paint 22 seconds later and after a Stephanie Harrold jumper at the with 3:22 remaining, SU held at least a two-point lead for the remainder of the contest.

Wesleyan had two chances in the waning moments to tie with a three-pointer, but senior Shawnte Dickens missed both attempts.

Hargbol led all scorers with 18 points while Flint added 13 and Stephanie Harrold 10. Hargbol had 13 rebounds to post a double-double.

Essence Chambers paced NCWC with 17 points, while Nicole Williams and Desiree’ Driver added 14 points apiece.  Driver also pulled down eight boards.

Wesleyan continues USA South play on Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. road match-up with Mary Baldwin.
