Last-second goal lifts Ferrum over
Bishop women, 2-1
Ferrum, VA -
In Thursday afternoon USA South
women's soccer action, the Panthers
of Ferrum College broke a 1-1 tie
with just 37 seconds remaining to
steal a 2-1 victory from North
Carolina Wesleyan. The
Bishops, who held an early 1-0 lead,
gave up two unanswered goals in
falling to 4-5-1 on the season, 2-3
in conference play. Ferrum now
stands at 4-7 overall, 1-2 in league
action.
Wesleyan got on the board first when
sophomore Reva McCloud took a pass
from Mayra Gomez and converted the
breakaway goal just 16:58 into the
match. The Panthers answered
with a Corinne Musanti goal in the
37th minute to send the two squads
into the break tied 1-1.
The
second half saw the Bishops get
out-shot 7-1, but goalie Cary Trump
recorded three saves to preserve the
tie. Just as it seemed the
game was headed for overtime,
Musanti found Cara Kolina in the box
for the gamewinner at the 89:23
mark.
The
Panthers out-shot Wesleyan 12-4 in
the match. Unfortunately for
the Bishops, McCloud's was the only
shot-on-goal of the day.
FC's Sarah Hutzler earned the win in
goal, while Trump took the tough
loss after recording six saves.
The
Bishops will return to USA South
conference action next Wednesday when
they host Methodist College at 4:00 p.m.
