Bishops fall to #18 Generals in
women's soccer action
Rocky
Mount, NC -
The 18th-ranked Generals of
Washington & Lee University remained
undefeated on Saturday, moving to
11-0-2 on the season with a 4-0 win
over North Carolina Wesleyan at
Scalf Field. W&L's Anne Van
Devender tallied two goals and
assist on the day.
Prior to match, Wesleyan honored
seniors Bryanne Brown, Janette
Davidson, and Christina Torres (all
pictured).
The Bishops also presented newly
inducted Hall of Fame member Julie Duerler with her retired #3 jersey.
Duerler was a three-time soccer
All-American at North Carolina
Wesleyan.
Anne Wiltshire scored what would
prove to be the eventual gamewinner
less than five minutes into the
match off of a Maggie Sutherland
deflected shot. Wesleyan
keeper Bryanne Godfrey, however,
recorded six impressive saves in the
half to keep the score at 1-0 at
intermission.
Van
Devender scored goals in the 48th
and 56th minutes, the second on an
18-yard blast, to put the Generals
on top 3-0. She added an
assist on Mary Clair Turner's goal
at the 64:42 mark to put the game
effectively out of reach.
W&L
out-shot Wesleyan 25-3 on the day.
General goalie Kiki Moreo did not
face a shot-on-goal in the victory.
Godfrey finished with eight saves,
while NCWC freshman Sarah Hess
played the final 21 minutes between
the posts and recorded four saves.
The
Bishops (4-7-1) will wrap up their
2006 regular season home slate when
St. Andrews Presbyterian visits
Scalf Field on Thursday. Game
time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
