Christopher Newport downs Wesleyan women, 8-1

Rocky Mount, NC - The Captains of Christopher Newport opened up a 5-0 lead at intermission and did not look back en route to an 8-1 USA South women's soccer victory over homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at Scalf Field.  Jackie Trono and Kelly Doherty each had two goals for the Captains (3-2, 2-0), while Meredith Hester notched the Bishops' lone goal.  Wesleyan is now 1-2-1 overall, 1-1 in league play.

CNU's Emily Renkin headed in the game's first goal in the 17th minute off a Trono assist.  Trono then booted home goals #2 and #3 off Nikki Greenberg and Doherty assists, respectively.  Ashley Wellner and Randi Brisbane each tallied scores in the final 10 minutes of the opening period for the 5-0 CNU advantage.

The Bishops broke through with a goal in the 64th minute.  Mayra Gomez delivered a beautiful corner kick that saw Captain goalie Erin Wojtkun make a great save.  Hester, however, was left alone in the box and touched home the deflection to make the score 5-1.

CNU responded with three goals over the final 15 minutes.  Doherty scored the first two, and Brittany Shumate rounded out the scoring with a goal at the 87:15 mark.

Starting Bishop goalie Cary Trump tallied eight saves in the first half, while Bryanne Godfrey recorded six in the second.  The Captains out-shot the Bishops 36-4 in the match.

Wesleyan travels to Mary Baldwin College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match-up.  It will be the Bishops' first road game of the season.
