Christopher Newport downs Wesleyan
women, 8-1

- The Captains of Christopher
Newport opened up a 5-0 lead at
intermission and did not look back
en route to an 8-1 USA South women's
soccer victory over homestanding
North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday
afternoon at Scalf Field.
Jackie Trono and Kelly Doherty each
had two goals for the Captains (3-2,
2-0), while Meredith Hester notched
the Bishops' lone goal.
Wesleyan is now 1-2-1 overall, 1-1
in league play.
CNU's Emily Renkin headed in the
game's first goal in the 17th minute
off a Trono assist. Trono then
booted home goals #2 and #3 off
Nikki Greenberg and Doherty assists,
respectively. Ashley Wellner
and Randi Brisbane each tallied
scores in the final 10 minutes of
the opening period for the 5-0 CNU
advantage.
The
Bishops broke through with a goal in
the 64th minute. Mayra Gomez
delivered a beautiful corner kick
that saw Captain goalie Erin Wojtkun
make a great save. Hester,
however, was left alone in the box
and touched home the deflection to
make the score 5-1.
CNU
responded with three goals over the
final 15 minutes. Doherty
scored the first two, and Brittany
Shumate rounded out the scoring with
a goal at the 87:15 mark.
Starting Bishop goalie Cary Trump
tallied eight saves in the first
half, while Bryanne Godfrey recorded
six in the second. The
Captains out-shot the Bishops 36-4
in the match.
Wesleyan travels to Mary Baldwin
College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m.
match-up. It will be the
Bishops' first road game of the
season.
