Wesleyan Students Succeed in the Workplace

Have you ever asked yourself, "How can I get experience in my major when I am still in school? How can I make myself more marketable upon graduation? How can I build an effective resume?" The answer is one word – INTERNSHIP! Each year an increasing number of Wesleyan students participate in the internship program. Working in a professional setting relative to their major during their junior or senior year helps students achieve both short and long-term goals. Interns earn academic credit while applying classroom knowledge to the business environment, test career choices, develop time-management skills, and create a network of professionals in their chosen career. Employers view internships as a means of evaluating a possible permanent hire once the intern completes their degree. Read the following remarks by several former interns.

Dan DaltonDan Dalton - An accounting major from Bernardston, MA, Dan is an honor student and member of the basketball team. He completed a Career Exploration Internship with a local accounting firm during his sophomore year. The following summer, Dan completed an internship with one of the "Big Five" international accounting firms and plans to pursue a career in tax accounting. Dan says, "The internship has had a positive influence on me."

Renee WalcottRenee Walcott ’00 alum - Renee interned with the Rocky Mount Police Department and rotated throughout the various departments. She was accepted into their Police Academy and became one of four officers in its first graduating class. "After this internship, I could not imagine doing anything else!"

Alyssa BattleAlyssa Battle - Alyssa majored in Political Science and completed several internships while a student at Wesleyan. She interned with Democracy South, a non-partisan political coalition and was hired as a campus coordinator when she graduated in 2001. Alyssa said, "Abstract concepts about law and government were made plain through this internship." She plans to pursue a master’s degree at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Adam TannerAdam Tanner - Adam graduated in December 1999, with a degree in Justice Studies and attributes his success to the internship program at Wesleyan. His first internship was with the State of NC Division of Community Corrections in the Halifax County Adult Probation and Day Reporting Center. He then completed two internships with the State Bureau of Investigation and, at age 23, was hired by the Bureau as an IBIS (Integrated Ballistics Identification System) operator in the crime lab. Adam says, "There are a lot of people out there who try for years to get a job with the Bureau and never make it. A lot of people don’t even get a chance for an internship. Out of 51 applicants from all over the state who applied when I did, only nine were selected. Wesleyan students got two of those slots. The SBI knows Wesleyan has good students." The other student selected was Michael Ferrell from Sharpsburg, NC.

Honeywell InternsPictured left to right are summer interns Tonya Bond, Kia Savage, Daniel Steven Durham, and Kasia Hunter with Georgia Salisbury, Human Resources Internship Coordinator for Honeywell, following their student presentations before Honeywell management in August.

Tonya, a senior CIS and Business Administration major and honor student from Sharpsburg, works full time at Abbott as a QA Specialist II and attends college full time. She reduced her hours at Abbott in order to complete the Honeywell internship.

Kia, a Washington, D.C. honor student, interned in the Advanced Materials Department assisting with a plant-wide computer conversion to One System, planner clean-up, and quality systems procedures.

Upcoming December graduate Daniel Steven Durham is an Elm City, NC resident, honor student and business major. For his summer internship, he worked in the Finance Controller’s office performing physical inventory, supporting One System implementation, assisting with monthly reconciliation, researching accounts receivable issues, and tracking and documenting supplier travel.

Kasia is a junior majoring in Computer Information Systems. As Procurement Department intern, she was directly involved and provided instruction in the One System switch-over, tracked purchase orders and requisitions and assisted with tracking parts for the LVDT program.

Amanda Dauses completed her internship at Eason Paint Horse FarmDo you envision completing an internship in a traditional office or lab setting? If so, think again! Check out May 2003 graduate Amanda Dauses as she delivers her Environmental Science internship presentation on horse breeding. Amanda completed an internship this past spring at Eason Paint Horses horse breeding farm and brought the mare and foal, she helped deliver, to campus as part of her class presentation. During the internship, she attended the Artificial Insemination and Breeding Management Course at North Carolina State University and received certification. She plans to continue working with the Easons until entering veterinary school.
