Overview: Certificate Program

The North Carolina Wesleyan College Department of Justice Studies has been a leader in criminal justice education for North Carolina and the Eastern seaboard since 1974. Now, it joins national and international schools in offering courses or a program of study in applied criminology, variously referred to as clinical or forensic criminology in other parts of the world.

The Certificate in Applied Criminology will meet the needs of individuals who have an interest or future career plans in forensics, scientific crime detection, crime analysis, intelligence work; or who already work as criminal investigators, criminalistics, or threat or crime analysts.

Each online class functions as an eight-week course that requires extensive reading and study, as well as significant email contact with the instructor who will provide students with assignments via a home page on the Internet that facilitates a number of class management functions. An online orientation session is held for new students. In addition, there are traditional orientation sessions that are regularly scheduled on the Rocky Mount campus.

A certificate is not a substitute for an academic degree. Students are strongly encouraged to continue their education by choosing Justice Studies as their major and completing our program leading to the B.A. in Justice Studies from North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Accessibility is a key feature of our program.  Each course is taught completely online over the Internet.  They are also taught in sequence every eight weeks year-round.  Except when you are already in a course you have registered for, you can start and stop your progress in the certificate program at anytime, and pick up where you left off when a missed course cycles around again. NCWC also provides a web portal site called Campus Cruiser, where other features are available, including password-protected areas. Students in the certificate program will have access to our school’s library, career, and student support services.

The Certificate Program is completed totally online. The advantage of this program is that you come to class when it is convenient for you. "Any time, Any where" education.
