After 3
weeks off, injuries to some key players,
traveling 9 hours, and playing short-handed, we
were afraid of how this game may play out.
Also, we did not know if the Limhamn Griffins
had made any new additions to the team like they
did in the 2nd half of the season last year when
they went on to win the championship. Some
players had to step in and play a lot more snaps
than they were used to playing, most of which
were young guys with little experience.
Our
offense took the field first with great field
position after a very good kickoff return. We
danced in the endzone 4 plays later on a 25-yard
QB keeper around the right side. Our “D” held
them to a 3-and-out and put us back on the
field. Penalties and miscues hurt us on the
next drive, but we were able to overcome in 3
third and long situations thanks to some good
runs after catches by our running back
replacement and wide receivers as we pounded it
into the endzone. The next drive ended in the
same result as the 1st two did, just in a
different fashion as we pounded away on the
ground the entire 7-play drive. Our defense
forced an interception and the return brought us
to the Griffin’s 30-yardline, however the drive
stalled and we settled for a 35-yard field
goal. We found ourselves back on the field with
1:14 left before halftime, and we were able to
score quickly as we connected on two straight
vertical passes and a 15-yard run by CF Sinclair
put 6 more points on the board.
So we
went into halftime up 30-0 and feeling pretty
good as we dominated them on both sides of the
ball. The second half was a little different
as their offense found the end zone twice and
managed to stay on the field a majority of the
2nd half with long penalty flooded drives. They
kept our offense off the field as we only had 3
drives the 2nd half but found points on two of
those. We managed to get out of the game with
no more injuries than we went into it with, and
some young guys getting some useful game
experience.
It
turned out that the long trip down didn’t affect
us as we came out both halves with good energy.
It was a good win and hopefully put us on a roll
to end up the season strong. The day also was
the day that a fellow NCWC Bishop would join me
in Sweden. Safety Jez Davis arrived to play the
remainder of the season with the Crusaders! His
first game will be against our rival, the
Stockholm Mean Machine. |
