Blue & Gold football
earns 51-17 Homecoming win over Scots
Rocky
Mount, NC
- In Saturday afternoon's 2009 Homecoming football
action, the Blue & Gold of North Carolina Wesleyan turned in
yet another impressive outing with a 51-17 thumping of
Maryville College at the Northern Nash Football Complex. The
Battling Bishops used a total team effort to secure their
fourth straight victory as six different players tallied
scores on the day. Defensively, Wesleyan held the Scots to
272 yards of offense and forced five turnovers.
The Bishops wasted no time getting on the
board as they took the opening kick-off 69 yards in nine
plays for a quick 7-0 lead. Bryan Haywood capped the drive
with a 6-yard touchdown run, the first of his three TD
rushes in the contest.
Maryville's Andrew Noboa made the score
7-3 on the Scots' first drive when he drilled a 23-yard
field-goal with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter.
Wesleyan, however, countered with another Haywood score,
this time from 13 yards out for a 14-3 NCWC advantage
heading into the second period of play.
The Bishop defense proceeded to shutout
Maryville the rest of the half, while offensively, NCWC
tacked on two more scores. Orlando Webb recorded 16-yard
touchdown catch and Haywood found the endzone from seven
yards out just before the break.
Leading 28-3 entering the third, Teron
Bush and Laqwan Brodie turned in 14- and 9-yard touchdown
scampers, which sandwiched a 22-yard field goal by Kevin
Quicker. The Bishops took their 44-3 lead into the final 15
minutes of play and continued the rout with a 45-yard TD run
by freshman Jamal Smith to open the period.
NCWC's string of 44 unanswered points was
later broken when the Scots managed two late scores on
touchdown runs by Darrell Tate and Nick Moore for the 51-17
final.
Bishop quarterback Bo Jordan finished
20-of-30 on the day for 291 yards and a touchdown.
Haywood and Smith led a balanced rushing attack with 74
yards apiece, while as a team, Wesleyan amassed 486 yards of
