The Bishop men's
tennis squad saw
its 2007 season
come to an end
on Saturday as
Wesleyan fell to
top-seeded
Averett
University by a
6-3 score in the
USA South
Tournament's
semifinals.
NCWC
had previously
downed
Greensboro 7-2
on Friday to
advance. Junior
Drew McLachlan
paced the
Bishops as the
only Wesleyan
player to go
undefeated in
both singles
and doubles
play, while
seniors Zach
Marks and Daniel
Pace played the
final matches of
their careers.
Pace (pictured)
teamed with
McLachlan to go
2-0 at #3
doubles.
On Friday, the
4th-seeded
Bishops turned
in an impressive
7-2 win over the
5th-seeded
Pride. Pace was
a straight-set
winner at #2
singles, while
teammates Matt
Smith, Mike
Harrison, Kyle
McCandless, and
McLachlan were
also singles
winners.
Wesleyan had
taken a 2-1 lead
in doubles
actions thanks
to the
2nd-seeded
tandem of
McCandless and
Smith, who were
9-8 (7-4)
winners. Pace
and McLachlan breezed
to an 8-1 win at
the third slot.
On Saturday,
top-seeded
Averett took a
2-1 lead in
doubles action
and managed
4-of-6 wins in
singles play.
Pace and
McLachlan scored
the Bishops'
lone doubles
point, while
McLachlan and
McCandless
earned
straight-set
wins at #5 and
#6 doubles,
respectively.
Like McLachlan,
McCandless was
also 2-0 in
tournament
singles.
For his efforts,
McLachlan was
named to the USA
South
All-Tournament
team.
The Bishops end
the season with
a 6-9 overall
record and
4th-place finish
in the USA South
with a 3-3
league mark.
