Christopher Newport softball takes two from Bishops

Rocky Mount, NC - Christopher Newport earned a USA South doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at Edge Field. The Captains (20-7-1, 5-2-1) were 4-1 winners in game one thanks to three unearned runs, while a Lindsay Kelly shutout in game two secured a 4-0 victory. The Bishops now stand at 12-10 on the season, 3-7 in conference action.

In the opener, CNU scored an unearned run in the first and two in the fifth to go on top 3-0. Renee Ashworth pushed the Captains’ lead to 4-0 with a solo blast to left in the sixth.

The Bishops made it interesting in the seventh. After Jessica Poindexter singled and scored, two hits and a walk loaded the bases. With the tying run at first and the winning run at the plate, CNU elected to bring in Kristen Rowe, who recorded a strikeout to end the threat and the game.

CNU starter Janet Fairchild earned the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing one run on six hits. Libby Fulford suffered the loss for Wesleyan, giving up four runs (one earned) on eight hits in the complete game effort.

Kristen Nickloy and Taylor Morgan paced the Captains with two hits apiece, while Ashlee Bass led the Bishops with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.

The second game saw CNU take an early 1-0 lead on a Danielle Steel RBI-single to center in the second. A pitcher’s dual through the first five innings, the Captains managed three insurance runs in the sixth on three hits and an error.

The 4-0 advantage was more than enough for Kelly, who recorded the complete game shutout. She allowed just two hits and struck out three. Tiffany McCord suffered the loss for Wesleyan after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday when Ferrum College visits Edge Field. The USA South twinbill is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
