Guilford softball tallies non-conference sweep of Bishops

Rocky Mount, NC - The Quaker softball team of Guilford College tallied a doubleheader sweep of homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday by 10-5 and 8-1 scores. Guilford overcame an early 3-0 deficit in game one thanks to a six-run second inning, while the Quaker pitching tandem of Samantha Golley and Jessica Burcham shut the door in game two. Wesleyan is now 7-13 on the season.

In the opener, the Bishops jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the first. After singles by Kate Braun and Carla Pridgen sandwiched a hit batsmen to load the bases senior Payton Gordon drove in Braun and Whitney Moshier with a single to left, while a double to left-center by Jessica Poindexter plated Pridgen.

Unfortunately, the lead was shortlived as the Quakers put up a six-spot in the second thanks to three hit batsmen, three walks, and three hits. Five different GC players recorded an RBI in the frame.

Guilford extended its lead to 9-3 in the fourth before the Bishops plated a pair in the bottom of the inning. Moshier delivered a bases loaded single to drive in the first run, and the second scored on the same play after the Quakers' relay throw made its way into the NCWC dugout.

GC's Kelly Hale went 2-for-3 in the game and closed out the scoring with a solo homerun in the sixth for the 10-5 final. Emily Willis earned the win in relief, going three innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. Burcham recorded the first of her two saves on the day by striking out seven over the final three innings of play.

For Wesleyan, Kacie Brandes (0-1) took the loss in the circle, while offensively, Braun, Moshier, and Gordon each tallied two hits.

It was all GC in the second game as Golley shutout the Bishops through four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. Wesleyan's lone run came in the seventh inning when Pridgen drew a bases loaded RBI-walk off of Burcham.

Brooke Davis (4-6) suffered the loss for NCWC, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and striking out four in the complete game effort.

The Bishops return to USA South action on Tuesday when they travel to Christopher Newport University for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill with the Captains.
